( Though Vaadiyars advise that Tarpanam should be done for both sides, it is my considered view that Amavasya Tarpanam should be done only for the Father's side. No tarpanam should be done during eclipses, sankramana kaalams and other times. Tarpanam should be done only on Amavasya days and after Varsha Srardham, with or without homam, Mahalaya and during teertha Srardham. Mahalaya Srardham / Tarpanam and Gaya Srardham should be done basically for Vamsa pithrus that is only those from the Fathers side, one's own mother, own brothers or sisters and their children and also the children of Fathers own or cousin brothers or sisters (Athai / Athya/Fufi and their husbands. These are the real karunya pithrus esp. for those among them are unmarried and nobody is there to do for them. Relatives beyond these should not be unneccessarily added. For other worthy relatives, friends, bosses, non related people who may be poor, they can be offered Tarpanam and Pindam in Teertha Srardham done in a kshehthram. Mother's parents and all relatives in their line are not even karunya pithrus, in my view. And though doing for Mother's side can be termed optional and better to be avoided and if at all only during Mahalaya and at Gaya and never on any other occasion including Amavasya. Lord Krishna slew Kamsan Mama though he was his mother's brother. Delivering apt punishment to the wicked is not prohibited in the Shastras. In Kali Yuga one has to see the ethical as the legal propriety. Whereas in case of one's own Parents and brothers, though they need not be supported and can be dissuaded from actions, that are wrong in Dharma, the relationship and the loyalty has to be maintained as it becomes a sacred obligation. All services, sacred rites and Tarpanam and Srardhams are to be performed irrespective of anything that they had done in their lives. No dosham occurs to the Kartha.
Despite Karna being treated with animosity during his life by the Pandavas, the Pandavas perform Srardha and Tarpana for him after learning that he was their own blood brother. Bhishma, Drona, Kripacharya and Karna fought on the sde of Duryodhana, since it was their ficudiciary duty and their dharma to fight against the Pandavas, though the Pandavas were actually on the side of Dharma with Lord Krishna with them. So also the brothers and sons of Karna, Strong dosham can occur, if holy acts are done for bad people, sinners, those who resort to black magic, who take help of mantravaadhis, who have committed crimes against others, who have usurped property of others, who have deliberately supported wrong people or wrong causes, and those who have no ethics or righteousness in life, and so come in the category of the fallen are called chandals who may get a horrible fate in their future life or afterlife. Such bad people and sinners are not qualified to do any rituals for Gods, visit temples, kshethras or take sacred baths. So without knowing about somebody's life, no Ritualistic Karma should be done to them in life or for their afterlife.
